Short answer: Most tree diseases in Southwest Michigan spread through predictable vectors — root grafts, sap-feeding insects, contaminated tools, or windborne spores. Prevention comes down to species selection, sanitation, vector control, and removing infected trees quickly enough to protect their neighbors.

The four diseases SW Michigan homeowners actually face

You don't need to memorize a botanical textbook. In Allegan, Kalamazoo, Van Buren, and Cass counties, four diseases account for the vast majority of landscape tree loss. Know what they look like and how they spread, and you'll handle 90% of what's likely to come through your yard.

1. Oak wilt (Bretziella fagacearum)

A vascular fungal disease that kills oaks — especially red oaks — within weeks of infection. Spreads two ways:

  • Above ground: sap beetles carry spores from tree to tree, especially during the high-risk April–July window
  • Below ground: root grafts between neighboring oaks move the pathogen directly through shared roots

Once a red oak is infected, mortality is nearly 100%. White oaks can sometimes live for years with the disease but still act as reservoirs, spreading it to more vulnerable red oaks nearby.

2. Emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis)

An invasive beetle that has killed tens of millions of ash trees across the Midwest since it arrived around 2002. The larvae feed under the bark, girdling the tree from the inside. Signs include D-shaped exit holes, S-shaped galleries under loose bark, epicormic shoots sprouting at the base, and crown dieback starting at the top. There is no cure once a tree is heavily infested — only prevention through systemic insecticide treatment (TREE-age or emamectin benzoate) every 2–3 years for high-value trees.

3. Anthracnose

A group of fungal diseases that affect sycamores, maples, oaks, and ashes. Symptoms include irregular brown spots on leaves, premature leaf drop, and twig dieback. Anthracnose is rarely fatal but disfigures trees and weakens them against other stressors. The fungus overwinters in fallen leaves and infected twigs, so cleanup matters.

4. Dutch elm disease (Ophiostoma)

A vascular wilt that kills American elms within weeks. Spread by elm bark beetles and through root grafts. The disease has decimated American elm populations since the 1960s, but disease-resistant cultivars (Princeton, Valley Forge, American Liberty, Princeton American) are now widely available and worth planting.

The five prevention methods that actually work

1. Species selection

The single most effective prevention method is choosing disease-resistant cultivars when planting:

  • Oaks: white oak group (white, swamp, bur, chinquapin) is more resistant to oak wilt than red oak group (red, pin, scarlet, black)
  • Elms: DED-resistant cultivars like Princeton and Valley Forge
  • Ashes: unfortunately no good EAB-resistant cultivar yet — treat prophylactically or plan for eventual replacement
  • Maples: avoid silver maple in favor of sugar maple or red maple in disease-prone sites

2. Sanitation

Clean tools between trees, especially oaks and elms. Use a 10% bleach solution or 70% alcohol on pruning equipment between cuts. Don't prune oaks during the high-risk spring window (April through July) when sap beetles are active and most likely to spread oak wilt. For Dutch elm, prune only during the dormant season (November through March).

3. Vector control

Different diseases need different approaches:

  • EAB: prophylactic emamectin benzoate injections every 2–3 years for high-value ash trees
  • Oak wilt: sever root grafts between infected and healthy oaks (typically with a trencher or vibratory plow) before removing the infected tree
  • Dutch elm: prompt removal of infected trees plus preventative fungicide injections for high-value neighboring elms

4. Early detection

Walk your property monthly during the growing season. The faster you spot disease, the more options you have. Yellowing leaves in summer, sudden wilting, or dieback in one branch all warrant a closer look. Compare your tree against neighboring trees of the same species — if yours is dropping leaves while the one across the street is fine, something's off with yours.

5. Timely removal

For oak wilt and Dutch elm, removing an infected tree within weeks of detection can save neighboring trees. Don't wait. Diseased wood should be destroyed (burned, chipped, or buried) — not used as firewood or mulch where beetles can access it. For oak wilt, debark or chip the wood before April to destroy any overwintering fungal mats.

When to call a certified arborist

If you suspect oak wilt or Dutch elm disease, call immediately — both are emergencies. A certified arborist can confirm the diagnosis (lab samples often required for oak wilt), coordinate root-graft severing, and handle removal before the disease spreads to the rest of your landscape — or your neighbors' trees.

For EAB, a TCIA-certified arborist can assess whether treatment is worth it for your ash tree based on its size, location, and overall health. Not every ash should be saved. A 30-inch-diameter green ash in the back corner is a different decision than a 12-inch well-placed specimen.
